Brimfield Antique Show

Brimfield antique show

We love Brimfield. We have thought about packing our things and moving to Brimfield. Yes, it’s that good.

The Brimfield Antique show is supposedly the largest antique show in the world. I read this somewhere on the internet so it must be true. Regardless, it’s the most amazing place on earth for antique junkies like us. It’s a bit overwhelming for first timers, or second timers for that matter. This place is HUGE and though we know our way around like nobody’s business, it still takes us a whole 4 days until we are satisfied that we haven’t missed anything. We purchase about 70% of our materials here, you can literally find anything you are looking for and a whole lot more that you didn’t even know you wanted. Words really can’t even describe some of the things that can be found, from the most bizarre to just plain cool and from I have to have that to why in the world …?! One of my favorite things is how many times you will here the phrase what is that?! never mind how many times you will say it yourself! The chairs in the photo above were made from the ends of old airport luggage carts, how cool is that?!

The above cart came out of an old industrial warehouse. Again, SO cool! I mean, who has that in their living room?! This inspired us enough to want to make one. I don’t think I could do that good of an upholstery job though. Making bags and upholstery are two very different things (I know cause I’ve tried).

We couldn’t really justify buying an antique carriage, especially without the horse but at the same time, couldn’t help thinking that would be cool to have. Funny how these shows make our minds short circuit somehow and we become completely illogical. I mean, what in the world what I actually do with that?! We are always trying to find ways to incorporate things into our decor and, though we don’t have the right house for this, I think in the right house (ok, mansion), it would look super cool!

Ok, here is one of those what is that?! that I referred to earlier. We still haven’t figured out what this is, or was. It’s like a huge magnifying glass. I’m pretty sure the mirror was put in (makes quite a bedroom mirror!) but what it was originally used for is beyond me. This was in what they call the “industrial field” where a lot of the things you’ll find here came out of old industrial buildings and warehouses. We LOVE all things industrial but again, I’m not sure I could blend this into our existing decor.

Antique ice cream bucket

We own that! That there is an antique ice cream bucket. Pretty neat, I mean, THIS is how they used to make ice cream!! I really couldn’t resist all that old rustic patina. It’s sitting in our living room with extra throw blankets and pillows in it

I’m not going to comment on the above pictures but there is definitely a theme going on here.

Again, no words!

Below are some pictures displaying another reason Brimfield is so awesome. People there really have a great sense of humor!!

The repurposing craze

Why has repurposing become such a world wide obsession? Well, we’re going to try to answer that for you!

What is repurposing? In our own definition, repurposing (some people call it upcycling) is taking something existing, maybe something old that may have reached the end of it’s lifespan, or something newer that just doesn’t have a purpose for you, and making it into something with a different intent altogether. This is something that almost all of us does without even realizing it. Like when you take an old container, bin or metal pot and use it for a planter. Or when you take an old couch cushion and give it to your dog to use as a dog bed. Yep, whether you realize it or not, you are part of the repurposing phenomenon!

So whats the difference between recycling and repurposing? Well, nothing really. Except maybe the part of the process we are referring to. When we send our cans and plastic bottles to be recycled, we don’t really know what they will be used again for eventually. But when we take something and turn it into something with a new use, or a new purpose, we are repurposing. Many of us do this for the obvious benefit of saving money. What a lot of us don’t realize, is that we are contributing to much larger good. The idea of creating less waste. For example, are you one of those people that doesn’t throw anything out, in the hopes that at some point you will have a use for it or be able to use it somehow in the future? And sure enough, when that time comes, that old tailgate from your granddaddy’s pick up truck makes the perfect cabinet door? Ok, most of us don’t do that but, you get the idea.

So why has repurposing become so popular? Its a fact that salvaging the unsalvageable has become a huge trend in home decor. People love the look of repurposed home furnishings and decor. So much so that everywhere you look, people are finding ways to repurpose things. Demand is so high that, did you know that buying repurposed wood floors cost roughly 3X more than new wood?! Yes, it’s become a total craze. Maybe it’s the unique, one of a kind look that is so appealing. After all, a piece of furniture that has been repurposed is unlikely to be duplicated. Maybe its the creative ways in which some pieces are being put back together that makes them a conversation piece as well as functional.  Whatever it is, some of us (who me??) are actually addicted to it. Yes, I reuse and repurpose everything. (These photos are just some of our bigger projects :))

We love repurposing for all the reasons above. There’s a general sense of feeling good that you have not thrown something out or wasted something that could potentially be very useful in some other form. There’s also the satisfaction of creating something so unique and so beautiful that others can truly appreciate. And then theres the final product, something to be proud of because you pretty much made it into what it is. Repurposing is not only practical, resourceful and money saving, it’s creative and beautiful. And trust me, it’s a lot of fun!

Need some ideas and inspiration? I find that the best place for that is Pinterest (yes I am also a Pinaholic).
